Get Your New Year's Resolutions Off To A Flying Start Using These 3 Simple, Easy-To-Remember Rules

It's true! People give up on their New Year resolutions but don't think about getting rid of them.

Here's what Ted Talks star Amy Morin says to do instead.

You've probably heard of the 10,000-hour rule that states you must practice a skill for 10,000 hours before becoming an expert.

The same principle applies to New Year's resolutions. You're in good shape if you've been making them all year.

If you still need to, you still have time to get started.

Here's what Ted Talks star Amy Morin says to do instead that will help you turn your resolutions into habits.

Morin, who spoke on a panel at this year's TEDGlobal conference, says her first advice is to start small. Then, "Get into the habit of making resolutions," she says.

That means starting with one goal at a time. For instance, when you resolve to eat healthier or lose weight, start by cutting out just one or two unhealthy foods from your diet.

Then, once you've done that, try another goal. Wow! Isn't that simple enough to execute? But have you started with that?

One of the recent podcasts, Write About Now, by Jonathan Small, revisit New Year's Resolution with Amy Morin… was a wonderful session that I recently hearted and loved… please have them with you too…

Don't Make A New Year's Resolution You Can't Keep!

As simple as making a resolution that you can keep. If you need more time, search through your past journal.

Any meaningful goals and resolutions or tasks that you used to do? If you don't like a journal, consider getting one started today to keep track of your progress.

Writing down your goals helps you stay focused and see where you've been successful and where you still need to.

I'm not saying you can't make a big change in your life, but I am saying that you can't do it all at once.

Once you're ready to take the plunge, add some additional tips for staying motivated. Make it fun.

The more fun you make your resolution, the more likely you will stick with it.

  • Start planning for your goals early.

  • Make your goals realistic and specific.

  • Make your goals short-term and long-term.

Write down your goals and follow three simple steps here for the best results:

Step 1: Write Down Your One Goal

  • Ensure to have a clear goal in mind.

  • What do you want to achieve?

  • Do you want to lose weight, get more clients, or start a business?

Examples of writing goals:

  1. I want to start a business.

  2. I want to get more clients.

  3. I want to lose weight.

You need to write down your goal but limit it to only "ONE GOAL AT A TIME!" And when you are done, let's go to the next step.

Step 2: Create A Plan To Get Started

  • Set a deadline

  • Be realistic

  • Write a schedule

Examples of setting deadlines and, therefore, your goal now improved:

  1. I want to start a business... by making $300 this month.

  2. I want to get more clients... to increase my profits by 30% this year.

  3. I want to lose weight... so my blood pressure can be regularised back to 120/70.

Be intentional and honest during this process. Whether or not you would eventually ditch your New year resolution before it even started or turn it fully monetizable depends on your honesty about what you can do vs. what you can't. Plan it out with a realistic timeframe and when you are done, let's go to the last step.

Step 3: Prioritize Your To-Do List To Get It Aligned With Your Goal

  • Create a list

  • Prioritize

  • Keep it in front of you

Examples of creating, prioritizing, and aligning your To-Do-Lists:

  1. I want to start a business by making $300 this month–Write down what your business will be doing. Create a mission and vision. Describe clearly how you'll be differentiating yourself from other businesses.

  2. I want to get more clients to increase my profits by 30% this year–Write down what you'll be doing to achieve this goal. List down everything you'll do to achieve that 30%, even if it seems small. List down as many as possible.

  3. I want to lose weight so my blood pressure can be regularised to 120/70–How do you plan to lose weight? List down those activities. What is your plan for meals? Write down those recipes.

Don't stop here, my friend. Remind yourself what your goal is and that you're taking the right steps toward achieving your goal now!

Don't Set Yourself A Goal That's Too Big

All quotes say, “Dream Big, Aim Big”; All good intentions, but never be under the impression that you can achieve something wonderful if you follow a new, fresh plan.

Unfortunately, we often make resolutions without thinking about what happens after the year has started.

You always use the previous year's plan to help you remember that you must make a follow-up goal for your next New Year's resolutions.

This is a great method for starting the year with a bang!

However, make a resolution with goals that are manageable to accomplish. Some believe they will change for the better if we have a resolution. However, this often finds you when the year begins, and they don't feel better.

In fact, they feel worse. You'll find that when you make a resolution with a goal that is too big to accomplish, you're setting yourself up for failure.

In addition, you're also setting yourself up for disappointment if you fail to achieve the goal. Do you want to see what happens to you when you set a goal way out of reach?

Then try this experiment.

  1. Think about the biggest goal you've ever set for yourself and write it down on paper.

  2. Then, write down how you will accomplish that goal in one year.

  3. Now, set a new goal, but keep the original goal in mind this time.

  4. When you begin your new goal, write down your goal again and this time, set a deadline of one year from the date you set your first goal.

How do you feel? I think you're feeling pretty good. This is because the new goal has been smaller and easier to accomplish.

Unfortunately, the same thing happens when you set a too-small goal. For example, if you set a goal of "I will start exercising more," you'll probably end up not exercising.

See the difference? Check out one more example below:

Make Sure Your New Year Resolution Is Something You Want To Do

Your new goal should be something you really want to accomplish. These goals can be as big or as small as you like.

If it's just a new habit, set a goal to make your old habit healthier. If it's something bigger, like losing weight, try setting a goal of losing 10 pounds.

If it's something even bigger, like quitting smoking, try a goal of giving up smoking for good. The point is to set a goal that is realistic and achievable.

Then, make it smaller enough to reach. And when you have decided to stick to the resolution you've made, be sure to stick to it!

Follow these tips to ensure your New year resolution is sticky!

Stay Focused: You need to focus on the tasks you can control and not worry about the rest. Once you've identified your goal, you'll need to stay focused and motivated throughout your process. In the way of saying 'Do what you can"

Be Patient: It's easy to feel overwhelmed when dealing with someone else, but we must be patient and remember that we're all human.

Take a Time-out: Are you working too hard? You need to take a break and ensure you're not burning out. Take a walk, and inhale some fresh air.

Don't Control Everything: Here is the saying, 'A person who can control their emotions and thoughts is more likely to succeed later in life. Of course, you cannot control the things that happen in life, but please remember that you can control how you respond to them.’
